Public Health Week 2023

Centering and Celebrating Cultures in Health

On March 28, 2023, the Nevada County Board of Supervisors unanimously declared April 3-9, 2023 Public Health Week. Since 1995, each year, during the first full week of April, the American Public Health Association (APHA) has brought together communities across the United States to observe National Public Health Week (NPHW) as a time to recognize the contributions of public health and highlight issues that are important to improving the health of our nation.

Public Health Week provides a chance for all of us to come together to restore and strengthen the public health of Nevada County and beyond. As we have seen so starkly over the past three years, public health is essential to every part of our life – not only to the safety and well-being of our families and communities but also to our prosperity. During NPHW, we celebrate the progress we have made to revitalize our public health, recommit ourselves to the work that remains, and recognize all the remarkable health care workers and public health professionals whose extraordinary sacrifice and courage on the front lines have carried Nevada County and the Country through one of the most difficult periods in our history.

This year’s NPHW theme is ‘Centering and Celebrating Cultures in Health’; our cultures have always shaped our health. We learn from the communities we’re born in and that we build together. For this NPHW, we look to community leaders as our health leaders. We celebrate the unique and joyful ways different cultures focus on health. And we look to how we can learn from each other, with humility and openness.
