Nevada County Animal Services
Animal Shelter
Welcome to the Nevada County Animal Shelter, where compassion meets care for every paw in our community.
We’re proud to serve as a safe haven for lost, abandoned, and surrendered pets—providing them with love, shelter, and a second chance. From adoptions and lost & found services to spay/neuter programs and educational outreach, we’re here to support both animals and the people who care for them.
In proud partnership with Sammie’s Friends, Nevada County’s longtime ally in animal welfare, we’re expanding our impact through fostering, volunteering, and adoptions. Together, we’re committed to the health, safety, and happiness of every animal that comes through our doors.
Whether you're looking to adopt, volunteer, or simply support local pets in need, we invite you to be part of our mission. Let’s make a difference—together.

The Nevada County Animal Shelter is proud to partner with Sammie’s Friends, a dedicated nonprofit organization that has been a cornerstone of animal welfare in our community for over two decades. Together, we share a mission to protect, care for, and find loving homes for the animals of Nevada County.
Since 2010, Sammie’s Friends has provided critical medical care, behavioral support, and adoption assistance to thousands of animals in need. Their unwavering commitment has helped ensure that even the most vulnerable pets receive a second chance at life. Through this partnership, the Nevada County Animal Shelter and Sammie’s Friends work hand-in-hand to:
- Provide compassionate shelter and care for lost, abandoned, and surrendered animals
- Facilitate pet adoptions and reunifications with families
- Offer spay/neuter programs and medical support
- Promote responsible pet ownership through community outreach and education
- Create opportunities for fostering and volunteering
This collaboration allows us to expand our reach and deepen our impact—ensuring that every animal receives the care, dignity, and love they deserve.
We invite you to join us in supporting this vital work. Whether you're looking to adopt, volunteer, or donate, your involvement helps make Nevada County a safer, more compassionate place for animals and the people who love them.

Nevada County is offering spay and neuter services to qualifying county residents. You must be a Nevada County resident living outside city limits (must provide proof of residence). One animal per household. Apply by filling out this linked form.
For lost pets, please contact the Nevada County Animal Shelter or the Grass Valley Animal Shelter to report a lost pet. This will help to reunite your animal quicker should a member of the public find your animal or if your animal were to be brought to either shelter. Also, post on the many local social media sites for lost pets to get the word out.
If you find a lost or wandering pet, please check for tags or a chip (at your closest vet) to contact the owner. If there is no contact information, please contact both shelters to report a found animal in the event the owner has reached out to report that same pet lost. It is best to hold on to the pet in that area as it's likely that the owner is nearby and searching. If you are unable to hold the pet, please bring them to the Nevada County Animal Shelter (if found in the unincorporated areas) or the Grass Valley Animal Shelter (if found within city limits).
