[ARCHIVED] Nevada County Celebrates National Public Health Week

National Public Health Week (NPHW) is April 1st through 7th, and the Nevada County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to declare Public Health Week in Nevada County as well.

About NPHW

What is NPHW? Each year, during the first full week of April, communities across the country come together to recognize the contributions of public health and highlight issues that are important to improving the health of our nation.

According to the American Public Health Association (APHA), the U.S. not only spends more on healthcare than other comparable countries, but Americans live shorter lives and struggle with more health issues such as obesity, infant mortality, diabetes and heart disease. That's why this year's theme is "Creating the Healthiest Nation: For science. For action. For health."

How to Participate

To achieve better health in one generation we need everyone — adults and children — to join the movement and to make eating healthy and being active every day a way of life. One way to get involved in NPHW is to join the Billion Steps Challenge and help APHA reach over two billion steps by the end of NPHW. You can do this, for example, by participating in this year's Daffodil Run – a fundraising event held at Western Gateway Park on Sunday, April 7th. We'll have a Public Health team there, walking and running the 5K events. We hope to see you there and celebrate NPHW with you!

Please join in the effort to ensure conditions where everyone has the opportunity to be healthy!
