[ARCHIVED] Lyman Gilmore Scheduled Week of Educational Activities for National “Kick Butts Day”

Lyman Gilmore Club Live members, supported by school counselor Mark Heine, kicked off their "Kick Butts" celebration on March 18, 2019. Kick Butts Day is a nationally celebrated day of activism - one that engages and empowers youth to speak out and stand up to Big Tobacco.

The Club Live group scheduled events for each day of the week, including an anti-tobacco meme-walk, which highlighted the students' memes targeting Big Tobacco. The Nevada County Public Health Department's Tobacco Prevention Program supported the club's events by educating students on how to enlist peer and faculty support and the importance of peer engagement during their activities.

The club also celebrated the week with a flash mob, encouraging lunchtime crowds to dance while sharing anti-vaping and anti-tobacco signs. Other activities included the "Wheel Truth about Vaping" game and a campus-wide chat with "Professor Vapinschmidt" on the dangers of using tobacco products and the chemicals ingested in doing so.

On the last day of their celebration, the Gilmore Club Live group encouraged their peers to sign the #BeTheFirst pledge – pledging to help create the first tobacco-free generation. The weeklong celebration proved to be an eye-opening experience for the many students and faculty involved.
