[ARCHIVED] Nevada County Students Participate in the Athlete Committed Summit

On June 5th, 64 students from Tahoe Truckee Unified School District participated in a Leadership Summit specifically for athletes who had been identified by coaches and faculty as emerging leaders from the district’s Athlete Committed program. The summit was supported in part by the Nevada County Public Health Department’s work to reduce youth alcohol use and abuse and the department’s investment in Athlete Committed programs across the county. The summit was designed to physically and mentally challenge students, place a high value on character development, build connections and teamwork, and promote communication within groups by exploring and utilizing restorative justice practices and mindfulness-based activities.

About Athlete Committed

Athlete Committed (AC) is nationally recognized for promoting youth leadership while decreasing teen alcohol and drug use. In 2015 the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District, in partnership with the Tahoe Truckee-Future Without Drug Dependence Coalition and Public Health’s substance use prevention program, implemented the AC program district-wide. AC programs are also supported at Nevada Union High School. AC provides support to athletes, coaches and parents and urges athletes to renew their commitment to living a life of excellence. This leadership program is unique in that is supports athletes’ positive choices with education on nutrition, fluids, sleep, and stress recovery. It reinforces a drug- and alcohol-free lifestyle and provides an opportunity for athletes and student to be recognized for their outstanding character, integrity, and dedication to a healthy lifestyle.
