Construction of the Combie Road Corridor Improvement Project started in July 2019 and is fully underway! Storm drain and sewer lines are one of the first orders of work and span the project from Higgins Road to Cascade Crossing Road. Meanwhile, widening work is also underway to include: two lanes in both directions on Combie Road from Highway 49 to east of Higgins Road; bicycle lanes on both sides of Combie Road from Highway 49 to West Hacienda Drive; modification of the traffic signal at the intersection of Highway 49 and Combie Road; and construction of a new signal on Combie Road at Higgins Road.
Although plans included a separated pedestrian/bicycle path between Higgins Road and West Hacienda Drive, these improvements could not be constructed at this time due to bid prices coming in over one million higher than anticipated. Fortunately, the improvements currently under construction will allow the separated pedestrian/bicycle path to be constructed once funding is secured for those additional improvements. Grant funds are a likely funding source for such improvements and Public Works staff plan to apply for such funds once available, likely within the next year.
The construction contract was awarded on May 28, 2019 to Baldwin Contracting Co. dba Knife River Construction for a total project cost of $3,673,438.52. The improvements that are currently under construction are scheduled to be completed in January 2020.
