At the end of June, I hosted a wildfire town hall in North San Juan at the North Columbia Schoolhouse. It was a great opportunity to connect with that community and I really enjoyed seeing everyone who came out. We discussed wildfire preparedness, public safety, and roadway safety concerns and heard comments from CAL FIRE, North San Juan Fire, the Nevada County Office of Emergency Services, Fire Safe Council, California Highway Patrol, Nevada County Public Works, Caltrans, and the sheriff. It was exciting to hear that Caltrans is going to construct a sidewalk along Highway 49 where it passes through downtown North San Juan – a much needed improvement to pedestrian safety there!
Since that event, there was a small fire in North San Juan, apparently started by a bulldozing accident on private property. A bulldozer pushed a tree into a power pole, which caused a power failure and ignited a fire. There were no injuries, no structures threatened, and no evacuations ordered. In the end, the fire burned about two acres. Phew! I'm glad everyone is safe. Thanks so much to CAL FIRE for stopping that one.
