[ARCHIVED] Summit Summit III Virtual Meeting

Donner Summit Logo

The beauty and recreation opportunities of Donner Summit have been ‘discovered.’ The number of visitors has increased dramatically over the past two years and the impacts are being experienced by us all. In 2019, with a grant from Placer County, the Donner Summit Association (DSA) embarked on the preparation of a plan to address public use and recreation visitation. The completion of the plan will help shape an orderly response to our current and future peak visitation challenges. DSA is ready to share the Plan. “Summit Summit III” will explore some of the visitation challenges faced by Donner Summit and will provide you with the opportunity to review and comment on the Plan: Donner Summit Public Use, Trails and Recreation Facilities Plan.

The Morning’s Proceedings: Returning to help facilitate our meeting is Sierra Business Council’s CEO Steve Frisch. Steve will open the meeting introducing both our County Supervisors followed by a review of recent accomplishments of DSA.

A Land Stewardship panel discussion focused on Donner Summit land steward management initiatives and stewardship priorities. Panelists will include Jonathan Cook-Fisher-US Forest Service; John Svahn-Truckee Donner Land Trust; Andy Fisher-Placer County; Katelynn Hopkins -Placer County; Tricia Tillotson -Nevada County Dir. Community Development Agency; and Nevada County Supervisor Hardy Bullock.

A Peak Visitation discussion will explore the role DSA’s new Plan will play in meeting peak visitation challenges. Colleen Dalton, director of Visit Tahoe-Truckee, and Jeffrey Thorsby, Sr. Admin. Analyst, Nevada County Board of Supervisors, will discuss current initiatives: “Sustainable Truckee,” the CCC Roundtable, STORC, and the Truckee Stewardship Council.

An update of the Van Norden Meadow Restoration & Recreation Project will be presented by Alecia Weisman of SYRCL.

Steve Frisch will take questions from participants and help us explore the next steps. Donner Summit residents and supporters are asked to help make the plan’s vision a reality. Participants will receive instructions to download the Plan and provide comments. The meeting will be recorded and available online.
