The County Personnel Administrators Association of California (CPAAC) selected Nevada County’s Human Resources Director Steve Rose to serve on their Board of Directors. Steve has been Nevada County’s Human Resources Director for three years. During that time, he has led Nevada County’s Human Resources Department through significant process improvements and changes, garnering statewide recognition. Steve will serve on the CPAAC Board for three years as Secretary, Vice-President, and President, consecutively. Steve’s role on the CPAAC Board will be a first for Nevada County.

Steve began streamlining Nevada County’s internship program in May 2019. Since it began, the program has hosted over 55 interns who performed over 22,000 intern hours, and Steve has leveraged $440,0000 in grant funding for the program. Participating interns have had a 67% job placement rate within the County and local employers, in addition to the program benefits for job seekers and local employers of developing local talent.

Under Steve’s leadership, Human Resources staff Susan Kadera and Tami Martinson created a Reduced Time to Hire program reducing the hiring and onboarding process for new Nevada County employees from 135 days to 38 days on average. This process improvement also allows the hiring manager to have a more interactive and collaborative experience with Human Resources during the hiring process.

As a Veteran himself, Steve has also brought focus to ensuring our Veterans can have successful careers with the County during their reserve military career and when their active duty service has concluded. Due to these efforts, the California Economic Development Office shares Nevada County’s work with Veterans and employment with others across the state. Additionally, Nevada County is poised to receive the Federal Department of Labor’s HIRE Vets Medallion Award in November, a federal-level veterans’ employment award that recognizes a company or organization’s commitment to veteran hiring, retention, and professional development.  If awarded, Nevada County will be the only large employer with this distinction in Northern California.

“I am so grateful for the opportunity to work with such a professional and dedicated HR staff who are committed to excellence. We set our goal back in 2020 to the best public sector HR office in the state and we are well on our way,” said Steve.
