This week the Nevada County Agricultural Commissioner presented the 2020 Nevada County Annual Crop and Livestock Report to the Board of Supervisors. This annual report helps gauge the economic health and diversity of the agricultural community here in Nevada County. In 2020, the total gross value of all agricultural crops produced in Nevada County was $19,725,200. This represents a decrease of approximately $3.7 million, or nearly 15%. This decrease is largely contributed to the gross value of livestock falling 33% to $3,640,300.
The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of our local food production as evident by empty produce shelves at national chain supermarkets during the beginning of this pandemic. Farmers that sold directly to restaurants were forced to quickly pivot and find other customers and many residents began growing their own vegetable garden. Throughout those uncertain times, Nevada County farmers and ranchers fulfilled their role as essential workers and fed our community. The total value in 2020 of fruit and vegetable crops increased almost 7%, or $175,900
