Nevada County Media (NCM) and the Nevada County Library recently collaborated to transform the Library's Bookmobile into a mobile television production studio.
“Providing mobile live production has always been a priority. It just took us a while to include it responsibly,” stated Ramona Howard, Executive Director at Nevada County Media. "In 2019, we lost the independent company that was doing most of the live production in our community, and that left a big hole. Stepping into those shoes required several items to fall into place."
Nick Wilczek, Nevada County Library Director, said that he “loves that the library can continue supporting our community and partner organizations in new, creative ways. I can’t wait to see what Ramona and the NCM team are able to accomplish with the mobile studio.”
The NCM mobile studio is a high definition set-up that allows for high definition multi-camera recording, live editing, streaming/broadcasting, and more. Partnerships with local chambers of commerce, cities, and the County will bring the NCM team out to many community events, starting this spring.
“The solutions used in this vehicle are the 5th installation of production equipment that NCM has done in the county,” Howard said. “This upgrade adventure began in 2017 and it has been in the plan since day one to include mobile production.”
NCM uses the same configuration of gear in all the locations it manages. The County, Grass Valley, Nevada City, the NCM studio, and now the mobile studio, all use the Telestream Wirecast system and a variety of AJA hardware.
“Both AJA and Telestream are local manufacturers, and it is important that we support them,” Howard adds.
NCM utilizes PEG (Public, Educational, and Government) Access Channel funding for the purchase of hardware; however, the gas, insurance, maintenance, and staffing will be paid for by Nevada County Media. NCM will be holding a “Support Our Truck” campaign to raise funds to wrap the vehicle. The vehicle wrap will represent the community and provide a place for sponsor names.
“We want the community to be happy when they see us rolling up, and feel good about supporting what NCM is doing,” said Cy Rinck, Nevada County Media Board President. “Media is an important component of a community.”
