[ARCHIVED] MYTHS VS REALITY

Notice of Election, June 7, 2022

Reality

Myth

Ballots are Safe and Secure in Nevada County!

  • We check signatures on every ballot envelope
  • We have strict Chain of Custody Procedures
  • We will not count ballots from unsealed envelopes
  • We call the voter to follow up with any questions before ballot extraction

There’s no way to ensure the security of vote-by-mail ballots.

Feel confident that your vote is safe and secure!

  • The Nevada County voting equipment is not online and has no ability to connect to the internet.
  • All voting equipment in California is certified for use in the State.  All systems are rigorously tested by the State.
  • The Elections Office conducts pre-election testing on equipment.
  • All votes cast, whether received in person or through the mail, are cast on paper before they are scanned.  The precinct results are tabulated after 8:00pm at the close of polls.

The voting equipment is easily hacked.

All provisional ballots are reviewed as part of the canvass process.

  • Provisional voting ensures that no properly registered voter is turned away nor denied their right to vote due to a clerical, processing, computer or other error
  • It also prevents double voting and voting out of county or state
  • Provisional voting allows elections officials to review the registrant’s information to ensure that no voter votes twice or is improperly denied the right to vote in a given election
  • Once determined valid, the vote is counted.

They only count provisional ballots when the election is close.

The Nevada County Elections Office will randomly select precincts for a manual tally of one percent of the precincts casting ballots after each election. This random selection of precincts will take place at the Nevada County Elections Office and is open to the public.

The elections office doesn’t audit the results.

Making sure your vote is safe and secure is our #1 priority!

  • Every voter’s signature is checked against our data base. If the signature does not match, the voter is contacted and the voter must take steps to cure the defect or the vote will not be counted.
  •  We also report cases of potential voter fraud to the Nevada County District Attorney’s Office and to the Secretary of State’s Office.

Voter fraud is rampant.

  • Deceased people cannot sign their ballot envelope.
  • We do not accept paw prints as valid signatures.
  • For a vote to count, a current signature must match the signature database. If there is a mismatch, the voter is contacted.
  • We do not count unmatched signatures.
  • The office receives daily reports from various agencies regarding deceased citizens, who are then canceled from active voter rolls.

Dead people and pets are voting.

All methods of voting are safe and secure.

  • We ensure a strict chain of custody on ballots and equipment.
  • Ballots are never left alone and are always in the presence of at least 2 election staff members.
  • We check every signature on every envelope, in the roster of ballots, and in equipment
  • Voters can vote in any way that makes them feel comfortable, by mail, dropbox, or in-person by paper ballot..

The only way to ensure the integrity of the vote is to vote in person.

  • All voter registration forms are kept on record.
  • All signatures of the voter are able to be reviewed by staff.
  • If a signature does not match any signature on file, the voter will be contacted and will be asked to reregister and/or update their signature.

There’s no way to verify signatures when they change over time.
