[ARCHIVED] National Public Works Week Celebrates County's Unsung Heroes

Comic book style drawing shows Public Works employees as superheroes.

On May 10th, the Board of Supervisors joined jurisdictions nationwide in proclaiming May 15th to 21st as National Public Works Week. Public Works professionals help keep our community strong by providing an infrastructure of services in transportation, wastewater, solid waste, road maintenance, engineering, and administration.

“Our teams are the backbone of the community. They provide the very foundation for which our entire community thrives,” said Pat Perkins, Nevada County’s Principal Engineer. “They are what makes our community a great place to live and work.”

This year’s National Public Works Week theme is Ready and Resilient. Within every Public Works professional lies an unsung hero. Public Works professionals are always READY to serve their communities and RESILIENT as ever in their abilities to adjust and assist after encountering challenges.

The Public Works team demonstrates their dedication to Nevada County every day and during significant events such as the 2021 December Storm Event.

“Every division works hard every day to keep our roads and bridges safe, our buses running, our garbage picked up and our wastewater collected and treated. During recent significant events, crews went above and beyond working around the clock to ensure public safety,” said Trisha Tillotson, Community Development Agency Director and Acting Public Works Director.

National Public Works Week was established in 1960 by the American Public Works Association to celebrate the Public Works professionals in North America. For 62 years, many states, provinces, cities/towns, and municipalities from across North America have celebrated National Public Works Week with official government proclamations and resolutions in honor of the contributions Public Works makes to their communities.
