The Nevada County Human Resources Internship program has created a new talent pipeline, providing on-the-job experience, hosting over 94 interns who have contributed over 40,000 hours serving Nevada County and its residents.
Nevada County Human Resources is highlighting interns with outstanding performance who display the core values of Nevada County.
This week's intern in the spotlight is Tony Solis, who is an internship coordinator with Nevada County Human Resources. Tony is a retired U.S. Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer and has been with Nevada County Human Resources since July of 2021. He has been responsible for placing thirteen interns within various departments and is ready for an additional nine interns that will start in the future. As an internship coordinator, Tony is responsible for recruiting, event organizing, and inter-departmental communication. Tony’s specialty is mentoring military members transitioning out of the service and helping them find rewarding internships that help them gain experience. He played a pivotal role in the 2022 inaugural Grass Valley Armed Forces Appreciation Day event, where he coordinated with businesses, military units, and other supporting services. Through his dedication to the event, over 1,500 people were able to attend. Tony is heavily involved in his community volunteering and hosting stand-downs.

Additionally, Tony spends his time as a Committee Chair for the Boy Scouts of America. Contributing to creating responsible, contributing members of society. Tony is affiliated with numerous volunteer organizations as well and always aims to serve others. Through his hard work and expertise, Tony has always been integral in any team he has been a part of and has been crucial in the success of the Nevada County Internship Program.
Tony Solis’s Biography
In 2015, Tony Solis retired from the U.S. Coast Guard after 24 years of honorable service. He started his career with the Coast Guard, conducting maintenance on a variety of systems, providing medical response, and firefighting. Additionally, he has worked with electricians and civil engineers to refurbish buildings as well as build generator structures.
In 2001, he was assigned to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where he was responsible for creating a solar-powered lighthouse on an uninhabited island. After his tour in Puerto Rico, Tony was assigned to oversee the maintenance of a U.S. Coast Guard vessel. He worked with different contractors to ensure that maintenance and improvements were completed as scheduled and within budget. He was also responsible for training over 500 students in the principles of plumbing, carpentry, and welding.
During his final tour, he was assigned as a supervisor at a Coast Guard welding shop that services a variety of ships before he retired.
He is currently an intern with Nevada County Human Resources as an Internship Coordinator.
Tony holds a bachelor’s degree in business management from Golden Gate University.
