FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Grass Valley, California
October 14, 2022
October is in full swing, and there is a lot going on at the Nevada County Library to celebrate the season! As the temperature drops and colors change, visit the library’s Event Calendar and discover something new – from a historic cemetery tour to new book clubs and some live music – there’s something spooky and scary for everyone. You can filter the busy calendar by age (adult, teen, or kid’s programs), location, or event type if you’re looking for something specific, like a book club or an art program.
Animal lovers of all-ages can join in on the October fun with Penn Valley's own Ursela Rabe, world-renowned animal communicator, empath, healer, clairvoyant, and psychic. Ursela will share information on how animal communication works, followed with a live communication demonstration with her furry friends. Unfortunately, we will not have time for a group reading, and the library respectfully asks that patrons do not bring their personal pets into the library (service animals are always welcome). This event will take place at the Madelyn Helling Library in Nevada City on October 18th at 5:15pm (the event start-time was chosen astrologically by Ursela Rabe herself).
Looking for a book club to join? Try Book Club 217, a new book club for lovers of horror and speculative fiction, that meets above Downtown Grass Valley’s Loot & Lore, located at 107 W. Main Street. This month the group discusses Alma Katsu’s The Horror on Thursday, October 20th at 5 pm. Upcoming book titles include My Heart is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones (November) and Stephen King’s The Shining (December). Find these books and more at library.nevadacountyca.gov.
Tour the historic Pine Grove Cemetery with author, Brian Suwada and Nevada County Poet Laureate, Kirsten Casey. Join them in the graveyard on Thursday, October 27th at 5:30 pm for a journey through time as they recount the lives and deaths of those who reside at Pine Grove Cemetery. Free transportation will be available from the Madelyn Helling Library at 5:10 pm due to limited parking at the event. Brian Suwada’s recent book, Spirits Took Flight: Nevada City’s Historic Pine Grove Cemetery is available for check out – find it at your local library or place a hold to get in line.
For something a little less frightful, save the date for the 3rd annual Spooky Boooky – a free book giveaway in partnership with the Community Support Network and First 5 Nevada County. Friday, October 28th at 3:00 pm – join us in costume at the Madelyn Helling Library for stories, treats, face painting and free books for ages 0 – 13 while supplies last.
