[ARCHIVED] Be Prepared: Significant Rainfall Could Lead to Flooding in Nevada County

Map of possible flooding during current storm

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for most of interior Northern California Friday through early Sunday morning. Moderate to heavy rainfall could bring 3 to 7 inches of rain in the foothills and up to 9 inches of rain in the mountains, which may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and flood-prone areas.

Here's how you can prepare:
  • Heavy rain and potential flooding could bring treacherous driving conditions. Never drive across flooded roads! It's a good time to stay off the roadways if you can stay home.
  • The incoming weather could result in power outages or down lines. Never touch down wires, charge up your devices, and use generators safely. Check the PG&E Outage Center for information on current outages in Western Nevada County or the Truckee Donner PUC outage page for outages in Eastern Nevada County.
  • Report down trees or flooding on unincorporated County roadways at www.NevadaCountyCA.gov/ServiceRequest. Our road crews are on call 24/7 during storm events to address roadway emergencies.
  • Clear out gutters and drainage to prevent flooding around your home. Free sand and sandbags are available from Nevada County Office of Emergency Services and the Town of Truckee at the following locations (please bring your own shovel!):
    • Nevada County Warehouse: the corner of Highway 49 and East Broad Street, Nevada City
    • Penn Valley Fire Protection District: 10513 Spenceville Road, Penn Valley
    • North San Juan Community Hall: 10057 Reservoir Street, North San Juan
    • Higgins Fire Department: 10106 Combie Road, Auburn
    • Peardale Chicago Park Station 57: 18934 Colfax Hwy, Grass Valley
    • US Forest Ranger Station: 10811 Stockrest Springs Rd, Truckee
