[ARCHIVED] Digital Equity Event Draws Broadband Champions

On May 12th, Nevada County was pleased to support the regional Broadband for All, Digital Equity, and Deployment Workshop in Grass Valley. The event included representatives from state agencies, including the California Department of Technology, Caltrans, and the California Public Utility Commission, a representative from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, community-based organizations, elected officials, internet service providers (ISPs), and many community champions. The workshop focused on identifying solutions to the unique barriers faced by rural counties in ensuring broadband access for all residents. Participant-proposed recommendations will feed into the state’s five-year Digital Equity Plan and Broadband, Equity, Access, and Deployment Plan that are currently being developed and which will direct millions of dollars in funding over the next 10 years throughout California.

Digital equity is a condition in which all individuals and communities have the information technology capacity needed for full participation in our society, democracy, and economy. Digital equity is necessary for civic and cultural participation, employment, lifelong learning, and access to essential services.

If you missed this event and have ideas on how to improve digital equity in Nevada County, you are invited to engage in the digital equity planning process virtually at the Statewide Digital Planning Group meeting and the six Outcome Area Working Group meetings. Event details, including dates and registration information, are updated and posted on the State's Broadband for All website as they are available. Outcome Area Working Group meeting dates are also listed there. Past events’ presentations and recordings will be uploaded on the Broadband Portal Past Events.

Take the Digital Equity Survey

Having easy access to the internet is critical to getting a better education, landing a job, accessing healthcare and essential services, and increasing civic participation. Yet millions of Californians don’t have access to the internet, devices, or the skills and training to use them. Our state is creating a plan to ensure all Californians, including rural communities (like Nevada County), low-income households, and aging populations (check and check!), have the access they need to succeed in the digital age.

One way to contribute toward the state’s work is by taking their Digital Equity Survey. The results of this survey will help California direct broadband funding where it's needed most.
