On Friday, September 28th, Nevada County Public Health hosted a one-day event, the Nevada County Healthy Communities Summit. The Summit brought together local experts, innovators, and thought-leaders to explore what it means to build, invest in, and support a healthy community.
Keynote: Dr. David Erickson from the Rederal Reserve Bank of San Francisco
The keynote speaker, Dr. David Erickson, PhD, is the director of Community Development at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. Dr. Erickson shared his experience and vision around innovative community development and emphasized the need for community engagement in any such process.

The Summit also hosted two panels, which included local leaders such as Shelly Covert of the Nisenan Tribe; Dr. Kellea Miller, international women’s rights researcher; Rev. Seth Kellermann of Grass Valley’s Episcopal Church; Julie Baker; Karen Leigh Sharp; Alison Schwedner of the Community Collaborative of Tahoe Truckee; Mark Erickson of Trkač Specialty Running of Grass Valley; and Jamal Walker, among others.
Starting Conversations About Community Health
With nearly one hundred people in attendance from throughout Nevada County, the Summit encouraged lively and challenging conversations around the connections between healthy people, healthy places, and a healthy economy. This Summit was the start of a series of conversations Public Health plans to convene around these ideas, as the department works to broaden our community’s understanding of and engagement with what health means.
