[ARCHIVED] 2024 Community Green Waste Events Begin

GreenWaste

On Monday, Nevada County residents took advantage of the first of many upcoming opportunities to dispose of residential green waste during free drop-off hosted by Waste Management at the McCourtney Road Transfer Station.

Over the coming weeks partners across Nevada County will be rolling out additional 2024 programming designed to provide suitable options for community members on both sides of the summit. This includes the new Firewise Community Green Waste Partnership Program, that has been specifically created to support the nearly 100 active Firewise Communities in Nevada County.

“2024 Community Green Waste Programs represent an investment of over $610,000 in support for the Nevada County community through grant funding, general fund, and other sources. We know that these resources are multiplied many times over through involvement of our partners and through the dedicated work of our residents. It really does take us all,” said Chair of the Nevada County Board of Supervisors Hardy Bullock.

Firewise Community Green Waste Partnership Program

This new program, spearheaded by the Nevada County Office of Emergency Services and in collaboration with Waste Management of Nevada County, CAL FIRE, City of Grass Valley, City of Nevada City, and Nevada County Consolidated Fire District, will place green waste bins directly into local neighborhoods at the request of Firewise Communities.

Green Waste Programs Build on Existing Efforts to Support the Community

GreenWaste2_GreenWasteBin“We are committed to providing free and low-cost green waste resources to our community. Our engaged residents play such a vital role in wildfire preparedness through their own initiative and volunteerism that helps the entire county be more wildfire resilient,” said OES Director Craig Griesbach.

2024 free community green waste programs expand on existing efforts led by the Office of Emergency Services to meet the unique needs of our rural community in cleaning up hazardous vegetation around their homes, neighborhoods, and evacuation routes.

It builds off a successful 2023 program funded by CAL FIRE, which deployed bins into impacted communities to support clean-up in the aftermath of the 2023 February winter storms. Work continues under this CAL FIRE grant with a focus on removing hazardous vegetation from private roads. Priority areas for treatment have been identified from community feedback that was solicited as part of the Nevada County Evacuation Study. This project will continue this spring/early summer ultimately clearing 209 acres of priority private roadside treatment. More information can be found here: ReadyNevadaCounty.org/StormCleanup.

The Office of Emergency Services is also supporting work in Firewise Communities through the 2024 Micro-Grant Program. Under this program, 38 grant applications were received, and 26 Firewise Communities were selected to receive $3,600 grants.
