The Doris Library for Historical Research will conduct a tour of the Pine Grove cemetery on Saturday, October 27th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This special Halloween program will begin at the historic Pinegrove cemetery, located on Red Dog Road in Nevada City. Local cemetery expert, author, and archaeologist Chris Ward, will provide an in-depth look at headstone signs and symbology, and discuss the historically rich lives of many of the Pinegrove occupants.
After the tour, participants are welcome to return to the Foley Library located at 211 North Pine Street in Nevada City for refreshments provided courtesy of the Friends of the Nevada County Libraries. Foley Library staff will be on hand to assist participants with further exploration of the Pinegrove cemetery and Nevada County history.
Local History
Nevada County is fortunate to be home to some of the most beautiful and historically rich cemeteries in California. Pine Grove Cemetery is one of the earliest cemeteries in Nevada County and the resting place of its most famous pioneers, including Niles Searls, Lyman Gilmore, and Henry Engelbright.
