Dino Parks, a junior at Sierra Academy of Expeditionary Learning in Grass Valley, was honored at Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting for his achievement in poetry.
Parks placed fourth in the statewide Poetry Out Loud Competition in March at the state Capitol for his recitation of two poems. He qualified to compete in the contest by winning the county competition in February.
“I’m so pleased that you did such a great job and represented Nevada County and made us all look good,” said Supervisor Heidi Hall.
Parks recited Alice Moore Dunbar-Nelson’s 1895 poem “The Idler,” one of his winning poems, at the Board meeting. He said he enjoyed competing at the state competition. “It was so fun! I’m excited to do it again next year.”
Poetry Out Loud is a National Arts Education program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering free educational materials and a recitation program for high school students across the company. The program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn about literary history and contemporary life.
