The Nevada County Library is inviting residents to join the Library of Congress's 2023-2024 Innovator in Residence, Jeffrey Yoo Warren, on a virtual journey through five historic Asian American sites during Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, from May 1 to 31. Yoo Warren, in collaboration with local artists and historians, has created "Hidden Portals"—immersive, mobile experiences that bring to life the early Chinese American and Korean American neighborhoods.
Explore these designated public spaces:
- Providence, Rhode Island: Empire Street, between Washington Street & Chapel Street
- Portland, Oregon: SW 18th Avenue, between SW Madison Street & SW Salmon Street
- Hanford, California: China Alley, between N Green Street & N White Street
- Truckee, California: Donner Pass Road & Spring Street
- Riverside, California: Cottage Street & Commerce Street
Visit the Hidden Portals site for contemporary photos and integrated maps. As you approach with the site open on your phone, a portal will appear with ambient sounds. Tap to enlarge, listen to Yoo Warren’s narration, and explore the scene. The portal will close as you leave.
