To support community wildfire preparedness, Nevada County Office of Emergency Services (OES) and United Way of Nevada County (UWNC) have teamed up to offer a FREE Community Go-Bag Party on June 8 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. at the Grass Valley Veteran’s Memorial Building. The event will be an opportunity for residents to refresh their Go-Bag with resources such as hand crank radios, evacuation tags, first aid kits, USB rechargeable flashlights, mylar blankets, zone magnets and more.

Event contributors included Interfaith Food Ministry, 211 Connecting Point, United States Forest Service, and AAA. “We are excited to have the support of local businesses and organizations for this event and hope that folks will come out to start or update their Go-Bag and get the latest information on disaster preparedness” says Louise Reed, Executive Director of UWNC.

Pre-made Go-Bags or Pet-Go Bags will be available to the first 100 community members and attendees can enter to win premium, fully stocked Go-Bags. OES and UWNC staff and volunteers will be on hand all morning to answer questions about wildfire and evacuation.

“OES and UWNC first landed on the concept of a collaborative Go-Bag Party about a year ago. The goal is to bring a suite of resources together all at once, offering a one-stop-shop for the community to get information about wildfires just ahead of the summer season” says Craig Griesbach, Director of OES.

Firewise Communities can place an order to pick up go-bag supplies to distribute within their communities. Orders can be placed through June 3 at: https://forms.office.com/g/de1SN6a3pu

UWNC has been helping the community get prepared for a natural disaster by distributing information prepared by the California Office of Emergency Services’ Listos program. Meanwhile OES has been gearing up for the 2024 mailing of the Ready, Set, Go Handbook, which helps walk residents through their emergency preparedness plans in advance of fire season.
