Alert: Scam Involving Fake Credit/EBT Card Readers in Nevada County

The Nevada County District Attorney’s Office and Nevada County Department of Social Services are issuing a warning to the public and local retailers about a recent scam involving fake credit/EBT card readers being placed at retail stores. These fraudulent devices are designed to steal card information, and several accounts have already been compromised.

Attention EBT Cardholders: This scam specifically targets EBT cards, putting cardholders at significant risk. Please remain vigilant and report any unusual activity on your card immediately.

To help protect against this threat, EBT cardholders are encouraged to use ebtEDGE, a mobile app and web-based portal offering comprehensive card management features. With ebtEDGE, you can:

  • Freeze your card when not in use.
  • Block online and out-of-state transactions.
  • Change PINs regularly for added security.
  • Request a replacement card if yours is compromised.
  • Use device biometrics, such as touch ID or facial recognition, to sign in securely via the mobile app.
