[ARCHIVED] Public Comment Sought on Proposed Cannabis Ordinance Amendments

Public Comment Sought on Proposed Cannabis Retail Ordinance Amendments

Nevada County is scheduling three public meetings in August on proposed amendments to its commercial cannabis cultivation ordinance as directed by the Board of Supervisors.

The draft ordinance proposes the following general changes in addition to other minor clarifications:

  • Allow a maximum of three retail cannabis dispensaries in select areas of the unincorporated county through a competitive selection process and use permit process.
  • Allow for manufacturing, indoor cultivation, distribution, and testing laboratories in industrial (M1) zoning districts within the unincorporated county.
  • Create an Exclusion Zone Combining District that would allow neighbors to apply to prohibit all commercial cannabis activities within neighborhoods.
  • Allow temporary cannabis events/markets in commercial zones.
  • Require all cannabis sold to be Nevada County grown only.
  • Require all property taxes to be paid prior to issuing cannabis permits.

Public meetings on the amendments are scheduled:

  • Thursday, Aug. 8, 6 p.m. at Soda Springs Mountain Resort Main Lodge, 10244 Soda Springs Road, Soda Springs.
  • Wednesday, Aug. 21, 6 p.m. at Higgins Lions Community Center (Roy Peterson Building) 22490 East Hacienda Drive, Grass Valley.
  • Thursday, Aug. 22, 5:30 p.m. at North San Juan Fire Protection District, 10057 Reservoir Street, North San Juan.

Written public comment can be submitted until Aug. 30 at 5 p.m. to Planning Director Brian Foss at Brian.Foss@NevadaCountyCa.gov or mailed to his attention at 950 Maidu Ave., Suite 170, Nevada City, CA. 95959.

The proposed amendments are expected to be considered by the Planning Commission in October and reviewed by the Board of Supervisors in November. For more information, visit www.NevadaCountyCa.gov/PlanningProjects.
