[ARCHIVED] Virtual Town Hall Focuses on Changes to Waste Disposal Starting in 2025

Join Us for VIRTUAL TOWN HALL Mon, Nov. 18 12:30-1:30pm www.nevadacountyca.gov/organics

The public is invited to a virtual town hall hosted by YubaNet to learn more about the upcoming changes to waste disposal starting in January 2025. After a short presentation, attendees may ask questions of Nevada County Public Works Director David Garcia and WM (Waste Management) District Manager Larry Picard during a YubaNet town hall on Monday, Nov.18, 2024, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

The upcoming changes, which are mandated by the state under Senate Bill 1383, require communities to divert organic waste away from landfills and instead use other methods to recycle the waste.

Upon completion of the McCourtney Road Transfer Station Improvement project in January 2025, customers who subscribe to WM collection service will be provided three carts: one for regular trash, one for recyclables (i.e., aluminum cans, paper), and one for organics, including food, green waste, and certain food-soiled containers. Weekly collection will be provided for trash and organics carts, while recycling will continue to be collected biweekly. Residents who don’t have curbside service will sort and self-haul their waste to an approved facility or compost at home.

“I look forward to helping community members better understand these changes and SB 1383,” said David Garcia, Nevada County Public Works director.  “This is the biggest change to how we deal with solid waste in California in more than 30 years, and like any change, it is going to be challenging, but we believe it will be worth it in the long run.”
