[ARCHIVED] Nevada County Reads 2025 is here!

NCR 2025 newsflash

NEVADA CITY, Calif. — Nevada County Library is thrilled to announce Nevada County Reads 2025, an annual community-wide literary celebration. Inspired by the National Endowment for the Arts' Big Read program, Nevada County Reads brings the community together each year through a shared reading experience.

The 2025 selection is Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer, a compelling work of speculative fiction that blends science fiction with environmental and psychological themes. This year’s Nevada County Reads is a partnership between Nevada County Library, Sierra College, and the Friends of the Nevada County Library.

About Annihilation

Originally published in 2014, Annihilation follows an all-female expedition into Area X, a mysterious and ever-changing landscape where nature and perception defy explanation. VanderMeer’s immersive storytelling explores themes of transformation, identity, and the complex relationship between humanity and the natural world. The novel received both the Nebula Award and Shirley Jackson Award for Best Novel in 2014

Annihilation Film Screening

As part of Nevada County Reads 2025, Nevada County Library will present a free screening of the 2018 film adaptation of Annihilation at the Nevada Theatre on Thursday, March 20, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Alex Garland, the film stars Natalie Portman and Oscar Isaac and brings VanderMeer’s novel to life with stunning visuals and psychological depth. The screening is recommended for viewers aged 17 and older.
