Nevada County Board of Supervisors approved the Resolution to Landmark the Grant Schoolhouse, located at 135 Winchester St, in Grass Valley, on March 11, 2025.
The landmark is to be designated as Nevada County Historical Landmark NEV 25-02. This is another step in the Commission’s effort to obtain historical designation of the remaining 19th century school houses that played such an important part in the history of Nevada County.
Located on the corner of Winchester and Marshall Streets in Grass Valley, the second oldest school in Gr ass Valley, the Winchester School was built on the site in 1864 at a cost of $1500. An adjacent school, the Grant School, was built in 1895. Both schoolhouses burned down in 1898.
The present Grant Schoolhouse was built on the site and opened in 1900. The school closed in 1968 and the building became a private residence. It underwent a number of careful renovations and is considered one of the best preserved buildings in Grass Valley.
The landmark will be featured in the next update to the Commission’s interactive landmarks map and in the next electronic edition of Exploring Nevada County, a guide to the over 200 historical landmarks in the County.
