[ARCHIVED] Top Summer Travel Tips: Stay Safe & Healthy Nevada County

Tips to stay travel safe, sungleasses, sunscreen, umbrella, water bottle.

Beat The Heat

  • Drink plenty of non‑alcoholic fluids - before, during, and after activities.
  • Wear loose, light-colored clothes, a hat, sunglasses, and SPF 30+ sunscreen.
  • Plan outdoor fun for early morning or evening hours.
  • Rest frequently in the shade, slow down on hikes or bike rides and acclimatize by adding an hour of heat exposure each day before you go.
  • Know the signs of heat cramps, exhaustion, and stroke - cool down and seek help if needed

Be Sun Smart

  • Use broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+) and reapply every 2 hours - or after swimming or sweating .
  • Cover up with a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses (UVA/UVB), and lightweight long sleeves.
  • Limit direct sun between 10 AM–4 PM; remember, UV can reflect off water, sand, snow, or clouds.

Swim Safely

  • Research local water conditions - currents, wildlife, and posted warnings.
  • Follow beach flag signals and swim parallel to shore to escape rip currents.
  • Never swim alone; keep a close eye on kids.
  • Wear a life jacket for boating or watersports and avoid alcohol before aquatic activities.

Dodge The Bite

  • Vector-borne diseases like West Nile virus, Lyme disease, and dengue are on the rise- and many have no vaccine or cure.
  • Use EPA-registered insect repellent (DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus) and reapply as directed, especially after sunscreen.
  • Wear long sleeves and pants, and check for ticks after outdoor activities like hiking, camping, or visiting wooded areas.

Measles & Vaccines

  • Measles risk is rising - the U.S. just experienced its worst outbreak in 30+ years (1,277 cases).
  • All international travelers need 2 doses of MMR, with an early dose for infants 6–11 months at least 2 weeks before departure.
  • If exposed or symptomatic, isolate and contact healthcare right away - MMR helps if given within 72 hours after exposure.
