Tyler Barrington, former principal planner at Nevada County, is the new director of the Nevada County Housing and Community Services Department.
Housing and Community Services administers grants like the community development block grant which supports providing opportunities for housing and other services and infrastructure for low-income residents. Housing and Community Services also helps facilitate grants and manage capital projects to support treatment of behavioral health and homeless clients. Examples include Odyssey House, Bost House, and the upcoming new psychiatric health facility to be constructed on the Nevada County Government Center campus in Nevada City.
Barrington has over 22 years of experience as a professional planner. He was first hired by the County in 2005 and has held a variety of roles in the Planning Department, becoming principal planner in 2011. In addition to working on many large and complicated land use development projects, Barrington has extensive experience developing land use policy for the County, including updating the County’s Housing Element and Zoning Regulations specific to housing. He is excited for the opportunity to lead the Department of Housing and Community Services as it builds upon past achievements.
As a longtime planner with the County, Barrington recognizes the difficulties residents face in finding affordable and achievable housing and is dedicated to serving the needs of the community. Barrington graduated from California State University, Chico, with a degree in liberal studies and geography and is a California State Association of Counties “California Credentialed County Senior Executive” and “Institute Fellow.” In addition to his work with the Planning Department, Barrington has served as staff to the County Housing Ad-Hoc Committee in 2024-2025, has been the County’s interim director of Housing and Community Services since December 2024 and is currently representing the County on the Tahoe Truckee Workforce Housing Agency Board of Directors. In his free time, Barrington loves spending time enjoying the diverse outdoor and recreational opportunities that are unique to Nevada County.
