[ARCHIVED] Old oil filters swapped for $15 vouchers toward new

Oil filter exchange event Sept. 20 at O'Reillys in Grass Valley

Oil Filter Exchange event took place May 17, 2025 at O'Reillys Auto Parts in Grass Valley.Nevada County residents can swap out used motor oil filters for new ones during the county’s Oil Filter Exchange event Saturday, Sept. 20.

“This will be our third event this year,” Julie Miller said of Nevada County Solid Waste. “The events have proven to be popular and it helps residents save a few bucks.”

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at O’Reilly Auto Parts, 742 Freeman Lane, next to Raley’s. Residents who bring in a used oil filter will receive a $15 voucher toward the purchase of a new filter. Exchanges and purchases must be completed during the same visit.

Each resident may recycle up to two used filters, while supplies last. A limited number of free oil change kits — including a funnel, oil pan and jug — will also be available, one per household.

The exchange is open only to Nevada County residents. Commercial customers and out-of-county residents are not eligible.

Future oil filter exchange events are planned for March 28 and May 16.

The event is funded through CalRecycle’s Oil Payment Program Grant, which supports local governments in expanding oil recycling efforts.
