Nevada County will give away compost on Saturday, Oct. 4 between 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis at the Nevada County Government Center 950 Maidu Ave., Nevada City.
Benefits for adding compost to your fall garden include helping plants grow stronger, it increases how deep roots grow, and conserves water by retaining moisture in the soil.
Eventgoers should plan to bring their own shovels and buckets or bags to haul away the compost. The compost will be given away in small quantities, limited to two containers per household, (no truck or trailer loads) and is not for commercial use.
The compost will be coming in from Recology’s Ostrom Organics in Wheatland. This is the facility that processes the food waste and yard waste from Nevada County residents.
For those who can’t make it to this event, a spring compost giveaway is planned for March 21.
This giveaway is funded by a CalRecycle grant aimed at educating about the benefits of recycling organic waste.
