The National Weather Service is predicting cold winter weather in the foothills this weekend with lows dipping below 30 degrees.
Cold Weather Shelter: December 1st - 3rd
In an effort to collaborate for one of our most vulnerable populations, the City of Nevada City, Sierra Roots and the County of Nevada have activated their Extreme Weather Shelter Protocol in an effort to temporarily shelter homeless citizens in our community. A Cold Weather Shelter will be open from 4:30 p.m. until 7:00 a.m. on Saturday night, December 1st, at the Seaman's Lodge in Pioneer Park located at 423 Nimrod Street in Nevada City, and Sunday and Monday nights, December 2nd and 3rd, at the Veteran’s Hall, located at 415 North Pine Street in Nevada City.
For the Grass Valley area, Salvation Army facility will not be opened on these dates. However, Salvation Army stands ready to assist homeless families through their normal access points or by calling (530) 274-3500.
Recent Partnerships
In November, the Board of Supervisors approved two new partnerships with Sierra Roots and the Salvation Army where they will fully support 20 nights each for sheltering homeless citizens during extremely cold winter nights for up to a combined total of 60 homeless individuals each night who are unable to access Hospitality House, due to capacity or other barriers that prohibit access.
Criteria for a Cold Weather Shelter
- Temperature below 30 degrees
- Temperature below 34 degrees with 1" rain in a 24 hour period
- Temperature below 34 degrees with snow on the ground; or 3 or more consecutive days of rain.
