Candidates seeking office in the June 2, 2026 Statewide Direct Primary Election may collect signatures to reduce or eliminate filing fees.
The signature-in-lieu filing period gives candidates the option to collect voter signatures instead of paying the full filing fee to appear on the ballot. In most cases, the filing fee is 1% of the annual salary of the office the candidate seeks.
“This helps reduce financial barriers to running for office,” said Registrar of Voters Armando Salud-Ambriz. “It gives candidates the option to qualify for the ballot through demonstrated voter support.”
The signature-in-lieu filing period opened Dec. 19 and runs through Feb. 4. The official nomination and candidate filing period opens Feb. 9 and ends March 6.
Valid voter signatures can also be applied towards the nomination signatures requirement of the office.
Candidates for statewide constitutional offices, county offices, representatives in Congress, members of the state Senate, and members of the state Assembly may obtain signature-in-lieu forms from the Elections Office, 950 Maidu Ave., Nevada City. Please contact the office to schedule an appointment at 530-265-1298.
