The Nevada County Department of Child Support Services (DCSS) is offering free income tax preparation assistance and e-filing simple returns. This is the seventh year of providing this free service, which starts Monday February 4th. DCSS will continue to collaborate with 211 Connecting Point to assist individuals and families to determine if they may be eligible for a refundable tax credit called the Earned Income Tax Credit, or EITC. Even if you do not have a tax filing for income taxes you may be eligible for this credit so long as you have earned income.
Unlike other tax credits, both EITC eligibility and the amount of tax credit you are eligible for is based on two main factors:
- The amount of your income, or combined incomes if married,
- Whether you have qualifying children
- These facts may all play a role when determining your eligibility for the credit and the amount.
You may still qualify for EITC even if you do not have children.
Free tax preparations and e-file appointment dates are available through April 17th, on most Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday’s from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Evening and weekend assistance is by appointment only.
For more information or to schedule an appointment you may contact 211 Connecting Point by dialing 2-1-1, DCSS at (530) 265–7097 or stop by the DCSS office at the Eric Rood Administrative Center. The DCSS reception desk is located within the Department of Social Services office. The entrance is on the west end of the Eric Rood Administrative Center.
