[ARCHIVED] SAEL Students Learn about Wastewater

On January 18th, a group of aspiring young minds from the Sierra Academy of Expeditionary Learning (SAEL) visited the Lake Wildwood Wastewater Treatment Plant in Penn Valley, California. The Nevada County Sanitation District hosted the students for a free interactive tour to find out what happens to wastewater once it goes down the drain, after you flush the toilet, take a shower or wash your dishes or clothes.

Students were shown each step of the treatment process, from primary treatment to disinfection as well as laboratory testing and interactive experiments and demonstrations.   Additionally, students learned what is being done to keep Deer Creek clean and what they can do to become more proactive stewards of our environment and help improve water quality.

A big thanks to Brad Torres, Wastewater Operations Manager, and Chad McBride (pictured), Wastewater Plant Operations Supervisor, and to Sierra Academy of Expeditionary Learning for the passion to educate our future.

Plant tours are available to anyone interested in learning more about wastewater treatment and Nevada County Sanitation District's role in the community. To request a plant tour, please contact Nevada County Sanitation District staff at (530) 265-1411 to schedule a date and time to tour the Lake Wildwood facility.
