The Truckee Library will hold a virtual reality program for kids on Thursday, February 21st at 4:00 p.m. and an introductory 3D printer training for adults on Thursday, February 28th from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. The Truckee Library is located at 10031 Levon Avenue in Truckee, California.
Virtual Reality
Virtual reality is a 3-dimensional, computer-generated environment created using a headset, hand controllers, and sensors. Kids, teens, and their families are invited to try out the Oculus Rift virtual reality system at the library. The virtual experiences on offer include a visit to outer space, a roller coaster ride, and more.
The Oculus Rift virtual reality experience is recommended for ages 13 and up. No registration is required for this event.
3D Printer Training
The introductory 3D printer training will take place at the library, located at 10031 Levon Avenue in Truckee. After completing the training, those who attend will be authorized to use the library's equipment to 3D print their own creations.
The training will cover the basics of how 3D printing works, how to operate the printer, and how to find or make designs for 3D objects.
Printers like the library's MakerBot Replicator+ use a plastic filament to build 3D objects one layer at a time. The filament is melted and then extruded in a thin line, which is laid down with precision to form each layer. Pre-made designs can be found online, and original designs can be created using 3D modeling software.
Besides being a fun and novel technology, 3D printers have real and impactful uses. Some things that can be made with 3D printers include prototypes, custom tools, accessories, and decorations, and replacement parts that are no longer produced.
