Free Residential Green Waste Disposal Launches Friday, May 14, in Truckee

Truckee, CA—Free residential green waste disposal for Nevada County residents kicks off this Friday, May 14, 2021, at the Truckee Rodeo Grounds from 8:00 am-2:00 pm. Volunteers from the Town of Truckee Police Department will be on-site to help with traffic flow and check in to keep the program running smoothly. Fire Safe Council of Nevada County (Fire Safe Council) staff will also be available to help residents unload their vehicles.

Every year homeowners are encouraged to create and maintain defensible space. Building a buffer between a structure and the grasses, trees, and shrubs that surround it, is essential to slowing or stopping a wildfire. Defensible space helps protect homes while providing greater safety for firefighters who may need to take a stand to defend property.

With 5 of the state’s 10 largest wildfires having burned in 2020, the trend seems to indicate that fires will be more intense and destructive in years to come. Unseasonably warm weather, low fuel moisture, and drought conditions early in the season have climate and fire professionals alike sounding the alarm that this fire season is likely to be severe.

“As we are heading into another drought in California, it is vital that everyone does their part to reduce fire fuels in our neighborhoods. It is going to take all-hands-on-deck to help make our communities safer,” says Truckee Fire Protection District Chief Seline.

“We know free is always appreciated. These past few years, we have seen an uptick in resident participation. We expect even more to take advantage of it this spring especially due to the economic impacts of COVID,” says Jamie Jones Executive Director of the Fire Safe Council.

The Free Residential Green Waste Program is a partnership between the County of Nevada, Fire Safe Council of Nevada County, Town of Truckee, Truckee Fire Protection District, and the Northern Sierra Air Quality Management District.

Free residential green waste will take place in Grass Valley and Truckee on select dates in May and June. See below for event details.
