On Monday evening, Nevada County celebrated the18 new graduates of its 2021 Citizen’s Academy class.
“We recognize that well-informed residents who participate in local government are key to our success,” said Nevada County Executive Officer Alison Lehman. “We are proud to have completed our seventh year of the program, and it truly speaks to the high level of engagement and leadership we have throughout our Nevada County community.”
Over the ten-week course, participants learned from over twenty department presentations covering a wide range of services from A (Agriculture) to Z (Zoning). Highlights included virtual tours of the Nevada County Airport and Wayne Brown Correctional Facility, discussion around community topics such as wildfire and broadband, and Q&A sessions with County CEO Alison Lehman, Board of Supervisors Chair Dan Miller, and Vice-Chair Sue Hoek.
“Early on in the class, we learned that Nevada County is truly ‘government with a heart.’ Each succeeding week that impression was re-confirmed as presenters explained how they strive to serve individual community members with care and consideration of their needs,” said participants Pete and Sue Williams. “Also, we loved the fact that the various departments are not ‘siloed.’ That is, as situations they encounter often involve more than one department, Nevada County staff routinely work across department lines to provide the best service.”
"I highly recommend the Citizen's Academy. It was a great educational opportunity to learn more about our local government's programs and services. The speakers from the various departments were all informative and knowledgeable, and I truly appreciated their willingness to answer all of our questions," added participant Tracy Pepper, Founder and Director of Color Me Human.
The goal of Citizen’s Academy is to increase civic engagement within Nevada County and acquaint community leaders with the various functions of County government. The program has over one hundred graduates to date.
