Nevada County Celebrates Ag Weights and Measure Week

Nevada County announces Weights and Measures Week, March 1 -7, 2022.  These dates are designated every year to commemorate President John Adams’s signing of the first United States weights and measures law on March 2nd, 1799.

“Here in Nevada County, we work to monitor things like propane, gas, grocery store scales, the volume of something like a cord of wood, or the declared quantity of items in a package. We work to ensure that everyone receives the accurate amount of an item for the value they spend. We are an integral part of Economic Development and oversight for a fair and equitable marketplace,” explains Chris DeNijs, Nevada County Agricultural Commissioner and Sealer of Weights and Measures.

Assuring quantity is the responsibility of the Weights and Measures world, specifically the Weights & Measures Inspector. Inspectors operate within rules and regulations as adopted by National Conference on Weights and Measures (NCWM) and referenced by states into law. NCWM’s model standards provide highly sophisticated tools that aid inspectors in the never-ending process of Equity in the Market place.

Inspectors often put in long hours in difficult environments, and with unique equipment that always begs the question from the public, “What is that thing you’re using there?” Weights and measures inspectors keep everyone on a level playing field and prevent inequities for consumers and competing industries.

The next time you pay for frozen yogurt, weigh apples at the store, or pull up at the gas station to refill your car's tank, you may notice the inspection sticker signifying the Nevada County Weights and Measures team’s work to provide accurate and market value items to you and your family.
