Xenia Lal, an Adult Literacy Coordinator at the Truckee Library, participated in an Adult New Reader book project through the California State Library and Sacramento Public Library. The project included workshops on how to write books aimed at new adult readers. Xenia, a 2020 transplant to Truckee, wrote a low-level reader called My New Hometown about the town of Truckee. The book features full-page pictures of the town as well as simple text that is easy for those new to literacy to read and comprehend. Lal is beyond excited to report that her book was included to be published by the program.
The Nevada County Library will have copies of her book available for our literacy program participants in the near future. Interest in the adult literacy program, called Read Up!, continues to grow in Eastern Nevada County. The Truckee Library now has a waitlist of learners seeking a tutor. If you are an Eastern County resident seeking a rewarding volunteer opportunity, please contact Xenia Lal at xenia.lal@co.nevada.ca.us for more information.
