Last Saturday evening, the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce held its 121st Annual Nevada City Awards, honoring businesses, organizations, and individuals who have made significant contributions to the Nevada City community.

Among the night’s honorees was Gus Becerra, Executive Director of the Regional Housing Authority, who accepted the W. Lon Cooper New Construction award for Cashin’s Field, an energy-efficient affordable housing community located at 170 Ridge Road in Nevada City.

The Cashin’s Field Development was the result of a strong collaboration across jurisdictions—including the Regional Housing Authority, the City of Nevada City, and the County of Nevada—to increase housing for residents of Nevada County.

The 51-unit development was designed to provide a community that is supportive of the families that live there and assist in creating supportive relationships amongst them; substantially preserve the existing ecological context of the site, including maintenance of much of the existing forest and stormwater patterns; and provide architecture that is consistent with the mining heritage of Nevada City and is reflective of current construction systems and aesthetics. The project was also designed to incorporate many of the City’s design standards and with “walkability” in mind.

Other 2023 award recipients included:

  • Amanda Ashley (aka Miss Moth), Dr. Leland and Sally Lewis Visual Arts Award
  • Kimberly Ewing, Dr. Leland and Sally Lewis Performing Arts Award
  • Farrow and the Peach Leaves, Live Music Award
  • 416 Broad Street, Stan Halls Architectural Award
  • Joe M. Griggs, Business Person of the Year
  • Three Forks Bakery and Brewery, Business of the Year
  • Communal Café, New Business of the Year
  • Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Community Service Award

Along with honoring this year’s recipients, the Chamber of Commerce welcomed new members of the Board of Directors, Megan Hart of the National Exchange Hotel, Melissa Goldman of Nevada City Framing, Milo Caruncho of Tri-Counties Bank, and Moriah Blue of Two Little Birds.
