[ARCHIVED] Nevada County Supervisors Set Action Plan to Advance Board Objectives

County of Nevada staff outlined an ambitious work plan in support of the Board of Supervisors’ 2024 objectives, which reflect community priorities. The eight objectives include fiscal stability and core services, emergency preparedness, economic development, broadband, climate resilience, housing, homelessness, and recreation.

On Tuesday, Supervisors discussed proposed budgets for each of the eight objectives. Supervisor Chair Hardy Bullock commented, “These plans reflect a tremendous amount of work spanning multiple years. I look forward to working with staff and community partners to continue our progress on these important community issues, like strategically expanding housing across Nevada County.”

Housing is a top priority for the County. The County is using local, state and federal grants to facilitate the development of new affordable and workforce housing. 93 units of new affordable housing are in the pipeline this year, building on the more than 140 units brought online last year. The County is also making it less expensive to permit “granny units” (also known as accessory dwelling units or ADUs) and is working on new policies that will make it easier to construct owner-built homes.

To support unhoused residents, the County plans to complete the Commons Resource Center, a day center serving unhoused residents, facilitate the expansion of permanent supportive housing, and develop strategies to better serve Truckee and North San Juan.

Investing in North San Juan’s economic future, the County proposes to invest in the construction of the North San Juan Fire Suppression System, which will include a 330,000-gallon water storage tank. This system will include water supply lines and fire hydrants, expanding community services and commercial land uses in downtown North San Juan. Other projects include supporting a Penn Valley Community Center and providing seed funding for the new Community Foundation of Nevada County. Cultivating economic diversification, sustainability, and equity throughout the county guides the Economic Development objective.

Each year, the Board of Supervisors identifies their annual priorities during the Board Workshop in January. The objectives identified aim to address community challenges and are used to manage County operations, programs, and services and to support the 2024/2025 budget development process. The 2024/2025 budget will be approved in June 2024 following two budget hearings.
