The Nevada County Board of Supervisors proudly proclaims May 2024 “Bicycle Month” in Nevada County. The Board encourages community members to ride a bicycle on one of the many available trails or paths, participate in “Ride Your Bike to Work Day” on May 16, or support local bicycle-oriented events scheduled this year.
In 1956, the League of American Bicyclists established May as National Bike Month to showcase the many benefits of bicycling and encourage more people to participate in or support bicycling. Bicycling provides an affordable transportation option by decreasing parking, gas, and other costs associated with driving. It also significantly reduces traffic congestion and air pollution and can improve physical, social, and community health.
Nevada County works with partner agencies to make bicycling safe and support connectivity to the rich network of paved and dirt trails available to bicyclists of all ages and abilities. Many community-based organizations in Nevada County provide access, equipment, education, and social opportunities for bicyclists, including Youth Bicyclists of Nevada County, Bicyclists of Nevada County, Truckee Dirt Union, Truckee Trails Foundation, Bear Yuba Land Trust, and many, many more school clubs, organizations, and businesses.
Throughout the spring, summer, and fall, Nevada County is buzzing with over a dozen bicycle-oriented events and activities. From the annual Heart of Gold Gravel Race and Festival, which raises funds and awareness for youth mental health organizations, to various community rides and races, there’s something for everyone.
