[ARCHIVED] The Seed Library is Back!

The Seed Library Newsflash

The Madelyn Helling Library is excited to announce the re-launch of its Seed Library, a collaborative effort between the Nevada County Library and the Nevada County Master Gardeners. This initiative provides community members with the opportunity to take home free seeds and grow their own gardens, promoting sustainability and self-sufficiency within Nevada County.

Seed Library Now Open

Library visitors can now access the Seed Library at the Madelyn Helling Library in Nevada City. Patrons are welcome to take up to five seed packets per visit, ensuring broad participation. The current selection includes seeds suitable for fall and winter planting. Over time, the Seed Library will feature a rotating variety of seeds to reflect the changing planting seasons.

“We are thrilled to offer this resource to our community,” said Ian Boalt, Adult Services Librarian of the Nevada County Library. “Gardening is a fantastic way to connect with nature, improve mental health, and promote sustainable living. Partnering with the Nevada County Master Gardeners again is an amazing opportunity, and the Seed Library represents a valuable resource for our community.”

Master Gardeners’ Enthusiasm and Future Plans

Nikki Duncan and Judy Nichols, master gardeners of Nevada County, expressed their enthusiasm for the project: “We are excited to help reestablish the Madelyn Helling Seed Library. We hope to maintain an extensive collection of donor seeds for all seasons and connect the public with the many Master Gardeners' educational workshop offerings. You can’t beat homegrown food!”

At this time, the library is not accepting seed donations, focusing instead on distributing the current stock and ensuring the success of this initial phase. Future plans may include accepting donations as the program grows.
