[ARCHIVED] Bridgeport Historic Bridge Construction to Begin Soon

Since 2011 the Historic Bridgeport Covered Bridge has been closed for foot traffic to the public.  Tens of thousands of visitors to the South Yuba River State Park over these years have missed the opportunity to walk across the longest single span historic wood covered bridge left in the world.  That's about to change!

Community Collaboration

Due to the concerted efforts of citizens, organizations, associations, local governments, non-profits and the California Department of Parks and Recreation, the renovation of the Bridge is about to begin.  The assessment of damage is done, the plans for reconstruction are drawn. The permits from numerous State and Federal agencies have been approved, full funding is in place for the contractor to do the work that has been selected and the contract is signed.

Construction Details

Preliminary work on the project can now begin with the contractor providing submittals for the processes and materials they will use. Timelines and staging areas will be determined.  Construction work will begin in the Spring of 2019, with the bulk of the work to be completed during low river flows in summer/early Fall 2019. Work is predicted to be completed by the end of December 2019.

Spectra Company, a California firm, has been selected to restore the bridge. Spectra specializes in the area of historic preservation and specialty construction.  They have worked on the rehabilitation of over 300 historical, architectural and cultural landmarks over the past 30 years.  Nevada County and the partnering agencies and organizations who have been a part of bringing this project to this point look forward to a complete rehabilitation and renovation of the Bridge that will help it endure for many more generations to experience and enjoy.
