The Board of Supervisors honored military on County staff and in the broader community Tuesday by declaring May 17 Armed Forces Day at Tuesday’s regular board meeting.

The day honors and recognizes men and women who serve in the country's military branches - Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Space Force and Coast Guard.

"To all of our active-duty service members, veterans and military families- thank you," said Supervisor Sue Hoek. "I think it so important that we appreciate the folks out there who are serving not just today but every day."

The Employer Service Guard and Reserve presented Elise Strickler, the chief fiscal and administrative officer for the County’s Information & General Services Agency, with its Patriotic Employer Award. Strickler was nominated by Daniel Amezola, an analyst in the agency and member of Air National Guard, for her support of his military obligations.

Approximately 10% of Nevada County’s 800 employees are veterans.

Amezola, who assists with IGS' fiscal and administrative team, said his military service hones his ability to stay organized, adapt under pressure and collaborate effectively. “I’m deeply grateful for the camaraderie of my unit and the opportunity to contribute to our County’s mission,” he said.

Deputy Sheriff Ryan Cain, who serves in the Army, said the military has given him experience with people from a broad number of backgrounds. “Understanding their personalities and their goals allows me to be more understanding, learn more, and keeps me motivated to work harder,” he said.
