As part of its commitment to transparency and community involvement, the Board of Supervisors is inviting the public to comment on Nevada County’s proposed $415.5 million budget for fiscal year 2025-26. The budget can be viewed at www.NevadaCountyCa.gov/Budget or at local libraries.
“This is a balanced budget and reflects months of careful planning and tough choices,” said Board of Supervisors Chair Heidi Hall. “In these uncertain economic times, we are fortunate to have a stable, carefully developed budget. At the same time, we’re prepared to stay flexible and respond to any changes that may come from federal or state budget decisions.”
The budget outlines the County’s proposed spending on all its operations, including public safety (sheriff, district attorney, public defender, probation, emergency services), community development (public works, planning, cannabis), health and human services (behavioral health, social services, housing), information general services (library, airport, technology), elections and more.
The proposed budget reflects a 7.3% increase over this year’s budget, largely driven by expanded funding from the state and federal grants awarded to the Office of Emergency Services and Health and Human Services Agency as well as three major bridge replacement projects. It also includes the addition of 24.5 full-time positions to support the County’s growing operational needs, including responding to emergencies and supporting community health and safety.
In response to the Governor’s revised state budget - which includes a $12 billion deficit leading to reduced funding for counties, Nevada County’s proposed budget is a conservative and measured approach including one-time and temporary reductions designed to preserve most core funding and services. Erin Mettler, the county’s chief fiscal officer, said the County has a solid financial position because of the Board’s budget policies and focus on long-range financial planning.
