Trevor J. Koski, Nevada County’s assistant county counsel, has been appointed as county counsel beginning Dec. 21. Koski will lead the County Counsel’s Office, which provides legal guidance to the Board of Supervisors, County departments, commissions, and staff, and represents the County in litigation and administrative proceedings.

Koski has served as assistant county counsel since 2021 and has been with the County Counsel’s Office for five years. He works closely with the current County Counsel Kit Elliott, who is retiring Dec. 20.

“I am pleased to have Trevor Koski step into the county counsel role,” said Board of Supervisors Chair Heidi Hall. “He will bring continuity to the office, and I know he will serve with his signature intelligence and humility as he has as assistant county counsel.  His varied and extensive background, local roots, and County experience will make him an excellent counsel.”

In his work at the Nevada County Counsel’s Office, he has advised on nearly every aspect of county governance, including land use, contracts, human resources, public safety, and public records and open meeting laws.

Before joining Nevada County, Koski built a broad legal foundation over more than two decades. He served as a staff attorney for the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, practiced at a national law firm, and worked for the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office and the Contra Costa County Counsel’s Office. This diverse background gave him broad experience in litigation, public policy, and government law.

Koski is a Nevada City resident with his wife and two children. “I am honored by the opportunity to serve as county counsel,” Koski said. “Public service here has been the most rewarding part of my career, and I look forward to building on the strengths of the Office while working alongside the Board and departments to support the County through the challenges ahead.”
