Homelessness is a complex issue impacting our community. There is no one way to solve the problem, just as there is no single reason people may become homeless. In the continued effort to keep our community safe and care for the most vulnerable among us, Nevada County has re-imagined what "Better Together" means in terms of meaningful collaboration by creating an easy way for community members to volunteer with non-profits working on homeless issues.

Poverty Simulation Training Emphasizes Understanding of Community Needs

On December 11th, County leadership staff across all sectors of County government experienced the virtual realities of poverty in a unique poverty simulation. The Community Action Poverty Simulation (CAPS) was developed to help people better understand the realities of poverty and to sensitize those who frequently deal with low income families as well as to create a broader awareness of poverty among policymakers, community leaders and others.

Are you a No Party Preference voter looking for your crossover card? Did you know that the American Independent Party, Democratic Party, and Libertarian Party will allow voters without a party preference to participate in their presidential primary? Look for the orange card in your mail!

together.

Historical Landmarks Commission: Donation Day

On Friday, December 20th, Grass Valley school children will parade through the streets to commemorate the 136th Donation Day.

In 1883, Caroline Mead Hanson, an invalid, was sitting at the window in her home at the corner of Neal and Church streets, watching children troop to school during a time when the local economy was sluggish and many were unemployed. In a letter to the Union, she suggested that school children bring a stick of firewood and a potato to school, where they would be collected and distributed for Christmas by the Grass Valley Ladies Relief Society. In 1889, A local merchant suggested a parade so that others in town could contribute. It has been a local tradition ever since.

The Caroline Mead Hanson house, located at 319 Neal Street, is registered as a Nevada County historical landmark.

All administrative County offices will be closed on Wednesday, December 25th, in observance of the Christmas holiday and Wednesday, January 1st, in observance of the New Year’s Day holiday. Public safety and Sheriff's patrol services will continue as normal. Normal business hours for other offices will resume on Thursday, December 26th, and Thursday, January 2nd.

Elections Warehouse Worker

Nevada County employs approximately 800 employees covering a full range of services and positions, from accountants to wastewater treatment system operators. In Nevada County, quality of life comes first. It is the only rural California county with two designated Cultural Arts Districts and is known for its abundance of outdoor recreational activities.

Nevada County's Elections Department is seeking four temporary Clerk Recorder Assistant I—Elections Warehouse Workers to support the March and November 2020 elections. These four temporary warehouse workers will assist in organizing and maintaining the Elections warehouse, and closer to the elections will help set up vote centers and gather ballots. The candidates will be working with sensitive technology and must be able to lift and move up to 25 pounds. The ideal candidate will be detail oriented and be able to stay focused on repetitive tasks. Must be able to work weekends and long irregular hours.
